What is referencing and why reference?
What is referencing?
When writing an academic paper, you have to use others’ views, theories and data to support your arguments. You are required to acknowledge the authors concerned by citing relevant publication information in your work. This practice is known as referencing.

Why reference?
Referencing is an integral part of formal academic writing at university and college level. It serves the purposes of:
  • Acknowledging sources of information
  • Giving credit to authors
  • Helping readers trace the ideas of authors
  • Avoiding plagiarism, which means taking others’ ideas as if they are your own without crediting the authors

Plagiarism is a serious academic offence which violates the principles of academic honesty and integrity, and is not acceptable in academia. Understanding the key rules of referencing is therefore important to prevent plagiarism and the penalties involved.

What to cite?
What publication information needs to be cited?
You should cite the following basic bibliographical elements:
  • Author’s family name
  • Title of the work
  • Publication Year
  • Name of publisher
  • Place of publication (applicable to APA 6th ed.)

By citing the above elements, readers are able to identify and retrieve the publications they are interested in for further reading.

What does it like?
Produced by the American Psychological Association (APA), APA citation style is commonly adopted in academia to acknowledge the sources of materials used in a research paper. The two major components are in-text citation and references.

In-text Citation
In-text citation means citing the sources in the text of your research paper. There are two types: direct quotation and paraphrasing.

References
References consist of a list of reference entries arranged in alphabetical order at the end of the text. The citation style for different formats of resources varies.

Source
This APA referencing guide provides examples of both 6th ed. and 7th ed. of the Publicational Manual of the American Psychological Association for your reference.

There are a number of variations regarding the referencing format (e.g. place of publication, retrieval of e-resources) between 6th and 7th ed. You are advised to consult your School / Department which edition of APA referencing you need to use.
